Rafflesia hasseltii Suringar

This species is named after Arend Ludolf Van Hasselt (1848-1909). [or was it Johan Coenraad van Hasselt, 1797-1823?].

The photograph below shows Rafflesia hasseltii on the cover of Oryx (Vol. 31, number 2, April 1997), the official journal of Flora and Fauna International. See article in this issue by Debbie Martyr (pp. 80-82) which discusses this amazing discovery. This is the first record of this plant from the park and only the third site described for the species this century.
