Eremitilla mexicana. This
genus was named by Yatskievych and Contreras Jiménez (Novon 2008) from
Guerrero, Mexico. The name means "little hermit of Mexico" in
reference to its secretive habit and rarity. The following photos
were provided by George Yatskievych.
Habit of the plant.
Only the top of the inflorescence is present above the soil.
Excavated root
of the only known host, Hedyosmum
mexicanum (Chloranthaceae), showing site of older senescent
shoots (left) and younger actively growing shoots (right) of the
parasite.
Excavated plant
in hand showing the long inflorescence axis that attaches to the
host root deep in the soil and rock.
Close-up of a
flower showing the didynamous stamens that insert below the
ovary (not on the corolla tube) and whose anthers are partially
embedded in the expanded filament apex. Both of these features are
unique (autapomorphic) for Orobanchaceae.
Close up of the infructescence.
Eremitilla is unusual in
Orobanchaceae in having a 5-ribbed ovary, previously unknown in the
family.
